What’s The Most Expensive Valentine’s Day Gift You Have Ever Gotten?

A pack of six cupcakes. My ex gave it to me three years ago. They were nice, nothing too out there. It was the gesture that was interesting, seeing that it was the second, and so far last, Valentine’s gift I’ve ever gotten.

I don’t think I ever found out how much it cost, but she didn’t get it in Nigeria, and we were in high school then. So I don’t think she spent too much of her own money, if any at all. 

When she gave me the gift, we were friends, and she said it was an unromantic gesture at the time. But we did date later that school year.

A brown wallet in 2022 from my ex-girlfriend (we’re technically on a break). It cost about ₦10k. I love that wallet. I still use it. It’s probably the best wallet I've ever had.

The number of perfumes and deodorants I have received for Valentine’s has given me severe existential crises! At some point, I couldn’t decipher if I had body odour or if they just wanted me to smell nice.

As we speak, I still have two bottles of perfume from last year that I haven’t opened. Women have to do better with gifting, honestly. Except I am the problem, then I will take my L.

Because I don’t understand why the most expensive Valentine’s gifts I’ve received are scents. Do I smell like a goat?

I haven't gotten a lot of Valentine's gifts in my life. I think it was food given to me last year by someone I'm in a casual relationship with. It was a platter with different things inside. I kept it in my fridge for about a day or two. The food was really good.

Thankfully it wasn't one of those weird curated boxes with handkerchiefs, socks and fake wristwatch with small chops by the side.

2 years ago, one of my closest friends bought a phone stand for me. It was such a thoughtful gift and I still use it to this day.

I have received a lot of Valentine’s gifts from many people at once that it is hard to place the most expensive.

When I was at university, I usually got gifts from six guys on the same day. My sister would play my wing-woman and go get some while I tried to divide my time between collecting the rest from the others.

I’ve been gifted phones, provisions, bags, teddy bears, and clothes. But all these were meaningless because I didn’t have a romantic love life with these people. I usually broke up with them the following year.

However, this is my second year of spending Valentine’s with the same person, and, for me, he is the most expensive gift I have ever had.

It was an admission offer letter from the Canadian university of my dreams.

I was at my babe’s place on Valentine’s Day because she wasn’t feeling well and couldn’t go out. While we were in bed (just lying down o), I received an email that my admission status had changed and that I should check my portal. 

My heart was beating like an annoying neighbour’s mortar in the middle of the night.

When I opened the portal, I just saw confetti! Come and see me and my babe crying like two idiots! The scholarship was quite generous, and I don’t think any other gift could top that.

It’s been a while since I spent Valentine’s Day with anyone, but I’d say that the most expensive gift I have ever received was a dinner date when I was 20.

My then-boyfriend went all out and booked this really nice restaurant for the evening.

He ended up spending $200 for the dinner. A whopping $200!

This was over six years ago, and he was also in his early 20s. If that wasn’t a pretty expensive Valentine’s gift from a boy his age, I don’t know what is.

Aside from familial love gifting, the only other Valentine’s gift I’ve gotten is a book, Pet by Akwaeke Emezie, which was very cute. My boyfriend at the time got it for me last year.

I think it was a small cake from my GF at the time. I don't know how much it cost, but it was around 2019, so maybe ₦1500. Even before 2019, I usually just got stuff like love letters. I got a wallet once (which was the nicest thing), but it wasn't the most expensive; it was about ₦500.
